A country is known by the way it treats its animals. – Jawaharlal Nehru

With more than 80 national parks and 500 wildlife sanctuaries, India represents the importance that the country places on nature and wildlife conservation. Indian National Parks provides ample chances to the tourists to have a close encounters with the wilds. Many tourists visit India to spot the infamous tigers and other wild animals.

Following are some of the best jewels from the casket of Indian National parks:

Sunderbans National Park

The Sundarbans National Park is a splendid tangle of mangrove jungle, which is the only one of its kind in the world. The name ‘Sunderbans’ means ‘beautiful forests’ and is educed from the ‘Sunderi’ trees. Sunderban located in West Bengal, with huge landmass of 54 islands, is accessible only by boats. With 3 wild life sanctuaries, this national park is providing natural habitat to around 300 Bengal tigers. Other than the renowned Bengal tigers, the area is also preserving reptiles specially the monster lizards, birds, and other animals such as monkeys, deer, and wild boar.

The most appropriate time to explore Sunderban National Park is from December to February.

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park is well-known for its spectacular setting like Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, The Jungle Book. This national park is wealthy with lush saal and bamboo forests, lakes, streams and open grasslands. With main area of 940 square kms and adjoining area of 1,005 square kms, Kanha National Park is the biggest national parks in Central India. March and April is the best time to visit there when tigers, baraasingha (swamp deer) and birds & animals come out in search of water due to hot weather.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the Madhya Pradesh state, about 200 kilometers north east of Jabalpur. It’s an illustrious park for its magnificent settings and having the highest numbers of tigers than any other park in India. With lush green valleys, rocky hills, and an ancient fort built on 800 meter (2,624 foot) high cliffs, Bandhavgarh National Park has become tourist’s first choice. Though tigers are the main feature of this park but leopards, jackals, sloth bears and birds are also catching the eyes.

The best time to plan a trip for this park is between March and April.

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park is an ideal combination of history and nature, located in Rajasthan, 450 kilometers south west of Delhi and 185 kilometers from Jaipur. Apart from tigers and other birds & animals, rocky plains & steep cliffs, and assorted range of flora and fauna, this park is also famous for a formidable castle inside the park, which was built in 10th century.

March and April are the most appropriate months to visit Ranthambore National Park as animals come out of their shelters for water.

Kaziranga National Park

Located in the “The Land of Rhino” Assam, Kaziranga National Park is one of the oldest and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in India. It is not only the shelter of the Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, but also provides home to a range of wild lives. The environment with many marshlands makes it an ecological bliss for wildlife in a country where deforestation due to overpopulation has destroyed many forests.

Whether it comes to spotting wild forms in their natural environment or flora-fauna and rocky hills, National parks are simply amazing! So, go and enjoy the jungle safaris!!!

“I stood there, very still, on the edge of the bridge. Rope clinging around my waist! My heart pounced so loudly I thought it would burst out. But then I took it, the first step off the bridge…. And I screamed! I was falling free in the air, and it was the best feeling I have ever had.”

No, this is not a description of someone jumping off a bridge but a person trying bungee jumping for the first time! If you have been following our blogs then you must remember that we began our chronicles of adventure tales by calling it “Extreme Fun”. Now we conclude this tale of adventure sports with the real “extreme” sport which is BUNGEE JUMPING. Till now what we have been writing about are doable sports, by every age group young or old. But bungee jumping needs a brave heart. If you enjoy thrills out of sports think again, can you really handle the thrills? If the answer is yes then bungee jumping is definitely the sport for you.

Why the hype?

If you can come close to death and yet escape it, how would that feel? The heart leaping out when you suspend into the air is exactly how you feel. Bungee jumping is one such sport which gives you the adrenaline rush you wish to get and you are definitely to get it each and every time you do it. You are to jump from a very high tower or bridge, the maximum length has been 233 meters so far, with the safety harnesses around you. As you dive from the great height, the rope or cord keeps you safe and suspended into the air as the leap ends. You can judge yourself from the height of the towers and bridges, where bungee jumping is practiced, how thrilling it will be.

Breathtaking Record

Although there are now places available from where you can jump up to 1050 feet high bridges, but the Guinness book of World Record has recorded the highest bungee jump by AJ Hackett from the Macau Tower in China of almost 764 feet. Many have categorized his jump as a sky jump which is not actually bungee jumping but nevertheless his name has been recorded as a world record breaker.

What is Required

Even though so many things are taken into consideration while preparing you for bungee jumping, there have been terrible accidents while performing this sport. We have been repeatedly emphasizing on a brave heart, this is the first thing you need because if you are going there as a weak hearted person chances are your “extreme fun” going way too extreme and ending up creating trouble for you. Because this a sport where you are suspended into air and there is nothing below you but metres and metres of thin air ending only with a rocky terrain, you can imagine the consequences if something goes wrong. So we give you a short list just to be prepared from your own side as well.

Get checked whether you are fit to perform this sport

Enquire the organizer how his safety equipments are and the past record of their performance.

Cords

Harness

Carabiners

Slings/Webbing

Bungee Cords

And of course great heights to jump from

The Craziest Bungee Jumping Places

The best thing about bungee jumping is that there is no specific time of the year to perform this sport; you just require enough mental ability. There are several amazing places to jump from, we list here a few.

Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado, USA : This bridge was built in the year 1929 and stands at a bind boggling height of 1,053 metres and is the highest suspension point in the world. It has a wooden plank way, so that before you jump, you can see for yourself the breathtaking height you will be suspended from and what you will be suspended into. Get the butterflies in the stomach as you stare down and see nothing far below. THIS is what we call the real thrill!!

Macau Tower, China: The famous AJ Hackett did it, then why you can’t. Macau tower stands at a height 760 feet from the ground. A thin building, from whose height Hackett jumped and broke the world record. Why this place stands apart is because you are not just jumping into empty air but a city building, where you have concerns of hitting something s you have double risks to deal with. But if performed safely nothing can go wrong and you would have completed your bungee jump successfully. But many identify this as ‘sky jumping’ as was the case when Hackett completed this sport.

Verzasca Dam, Val Verzasca, Switzerland : Next in queue is the Verzasca Dam, built at a height of 721 feet from the ground. It became a popular site for bungee jumping after James Bond jumped from it in the first scene of the movie “Golden Eye” in 1995. It was also a stunt voted as the best stunt of all time in 2002. Soon after the movie, the dam owners set out on a commercial venture and made it a bungee jumping sport. The archways of the dam provide enough space for your fall and you can see the cemented heights racing against your eyes as you take the leap.

Bungee jumping as evolved immensely through the time. We suggest you to join 78mm Adventure for some insanely crazy bungee jumping trips. We can take you to places where the thrills wil be equivalent to what you watch in the television. Although the most popular places are in USA or UK but we identify places for bungee jumping in our own India. So pack your bags and get remember that it is essential to consult a doctor before you decide to take this leap because if you are not careful this can be the last leap of your life! Because even though thrills are fun but some wise man has said “thrill kills”, so let’s take that into consideration too and be safe!

Reinhold Messner, considered the greatest climber in the history, once said “…I often think that we mountaineers get nearest to it, this paradise on earth. Or, to put it another way: the truly free climber is one who obeys no rules. He is no high flyer, keeping up with the Joneses; no slave of others or of the summit fall line, like the directtissima men. I am sorry for them all, but especially for those who do not realize at all that rules force their way between them and the mountains.” He is someone who lives for climbing, not fearing the risks or threats involved. He was the first to ascent on Everest without an oxygen supplement. Such is a true and passionate rock climber!

Rock climbing is a sport which is demanding at a mental as well as physical level. It requires immense amount of courage, therefore, it is not for everyone. It tests your strength, skills and agility. But strength may not always matter, if you don’t have enough balance and concentration. Now rock climbing is done both indoors as well as outdoors. Outdoors is familiar to everyone but indoor rock climbing is something which has recently come into picture. An artificial wall is built with a rocky terrain and this sport can be tried by all age groups as it is done under a supervised environment with the appropriate facilities and gears. But as it is believed if you don’t have enough risks up your sleeves, you are not having enough fun! That is why for real adventure, we would suggest you try the outdoor rock climbing.

As simple as the definition of rock climbing may sound, climbing from bottom to top, it is most certainly not that easy. It involves danger and risks like slipping, if you don’t have the right gear, therefore it becomes essential for you to make a check list which should include:

1. Shoes : Whenever you go for an adventure, shoes become an important part of your gear because of the amount of physical activity involved. For rock climbing, you first need to decide your goal and type of climbing. But grip is what is essential while selecting your shoes. If the grip on your shoes is not good, then chances are that you may slip and hurt yourself. Your shoes should be such that they suit the purpose of running as well as climbing. The rubber sole should have a good grip, should be thick and the tip should just touch till the end of your longest toe.

2. Harness and Carabiners : Harness is used while climbing in order to provide safety. It is used to secure a person to a piece of rope or an anchor point. Harnesses are mainly of three types, sit string harness, chest harness and full body harness. Sit string are the ones which are most commonly used. Apart from giving you with the safety you require, they also prevent the climber from any pain in the upper thigh area. In chest harness, an extra support is provided with the loops around shoulders, this comes handy if carrying a heavy back pack, as it will provide with an appropriate balance. Full body harness is mostly used when it comes to safety for small children. Carabiners are basically connecters which are used while climbing. The ones used for sports such as rock climbing are lighter in weight. Carabiners facilitate easier rope clipping.

3. Climbing Ropes : Length and strength are two things which matter while choosing a rope for your need. Length will depend on the height or the kind of rock climbing you will be pursuing. But strength of the rope should be such, that iot does not break but at the same time should be able to stretch under load and absorb shock required for a free fall of a person. Usually the thickness of the rope varies between 9mm to 11 mm. Even though immense precautions are taken, there are still many accidents every year. Therefore, you must choose your ropes wisely.

4. Helmet: Skull might be the toughest bone but if the head receives a shock after being hit, it can cause maximum damage. Because you will be using a rope for climbing, a pendulum movement is bound to happen and you may end up hitting your head. Therefore, it is important to carry a helmet with yourself. For outdoors, we would suggest ALWAYS carry a helmet, you might skip it if you are indoors.

It’s fun to be at risk whenever we are on an adventurous expedition, but it’s rather foolish to be careless and ignore the risks involved, which is why we suggest you to go ahead and explore the wondrous and bounteous world of rock climbing but SAFETY FIRST!

“Great things are done when men and mountains meet. This is not done by jostling in the street.” -William Blake

127 hours, scene one, James Franco going speedily in the rugged terrain of Utah on a bike… If you have seen 127 hours, then you are aware what mountain biking is. A real adventurer bubbling with energy is not afraid of anything and is ready to explore new heights, not worrying about the risk involved. Keeping aside how Franco ends up caught in a rock, let’s concentrate on the first scene and the fun of mountain biking.

What is Mountain Biking?

Mountain biking is an adventure sport which can be defined as biking off roads or a specific track. The ‘mountain’ in mountain biking does not mean that it actually takes place on mountains. It can be done anyplace but off-road. Generally a rough terrain is chosen for this sport. The thrill lies in the speed while riding on an uneven terrain; this may also consist of a terrain filled with rocks. Such an expedition brings out the explorer in you and you can enjoy the serene view while swiftly paddling with the wind. But mountain biking requires an immense amount of courage and the heart of an adventurer. Every trail you drive your wheels through should be a unique and challenging experience.

Types

Some of the types of mountain biking are:

Cross Country: This is probably the most popular form of mountain biking. It involves riding from one point to the other or in a loop. It includes climbing and descent on various types of terrains. Cross country biking officially became an Olympic sport too in 1996.

Downhill: As the name suggests, downhill biking means that biking which is done downhill. It is also a popular biking event in which riders begin at a time trail of 30 seconds and usually take two to five minutes to complete the track. These races are held on a steep terrain, thus, making it risky.

Dirt Jumping: This kind of biking is done on dirt or muddy terrain because riders tend become airborne while jumping in such rides. The aim is to ‘take-off’ and then ‘land’, thus, having the need of a soft ground to land on. Riders tend to do back flips to make such rides more challenging.

Freeride: This type of biking too involves tricks and styles which are practiced while riding the bike. This can be included in dirt jumping and downhill cycling.

Mountain Bike Trials: Another form which adapts tricks on the rider’s part is mountain bike trials. In this discipline rider tries to pass obstacles without setting feet on the ground. This usually is done to test one’s skills and of course the thrills it gives!

Mountain Biking in India

North India is considered the best place for mountain biking, between October to December. The reason being, North India consists of a wide range of mountains. The Himalayan ranges, Kumaon and Garhwal, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Sikkim are some the popular places for riders to go. The immense rocky terrain gives the riders a perfect destination and challenge to go on their adventurous tour. Some prefer to go in the chilling month of December to the Himalayas and ride against the chilly winds of the snowy mountains.

No matter how exciting this sounds, but there are always risks involved in such adventure sports, especially ones such as these which are taken place in terrain filled with rocks. Therefore, you need to find the right bike and the biking gear. Never go on such trips unplanned and enjoy the mountain trips in safety. You don’t want to end up in a real life “127 hours”!

If you have been following our blog, then you must be aware that now we arrive at the next adventure sport, Jeep Safari. Traditionally speaking, a safari was a trip taken mostly in Africa for hunting. But today it has become a trip for exploring and observing the wildlife. Turning to the etymology of the word, it means “long journey” in Swahili. The term is believed to have been coined by Sir Richard Francis Burton. Jeep safari is named so because it is the form of safari where the vehicle used is a jeep. The advantage it gives is that it can travel through a rugged terrain and at a great speed as well. Today, jeep safari is a major tourist attraction and is conducted in various continents, the most popular still being Africa. Being one of the largest countries in the world when it comes to land area and a diverse topography, India becomes the centre of attention for adventurers interested in safaris. Some of the greatest places for explorers are the Himalayas, Rajasthan, Jim Corbett Park, etc. We enlist the top places where you can enjoy a serene Jeep Safari experience.

Leh – Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir: Although the Great Himalayas are filled with places for an amazing jeep safari experience but the Leh-Ladakh region is the most popular one. Located between the Kunlun mountain range and the south of the Great Himalyas, Ladakh is one of the top spots for tourists interested in jeep safari. The maximum explored regions are the high altitude lakes of Tso Moriri and Pangong Tso. The drive through Pangong Tso is done through jeep safari because not many transportation options are available in this region. One can experience a heart throbbing cross country trip through this region. Similar to this is the situation with Tso Moriri, possibly the only way to reach there from Leh is through jeep safari. You can even extend your trip up to Manali through this route.

Rajasthan: Being mostly a desert area, jeep safari is popular in the state of Rajasthan. The jeep safaris in this cultural state is not so much for the wildlife as it is for it’s remote villages rich with age old heritage and ethnic life. There are numerous forts and temples which can be explored. The open jeep safari allows you to truly enrich your experience of traveling in the sand dunes of the miles stretching desert. Some of the famous areas for jeep safari are Ranthambore and Sariska national parks helping you to explore the enthralling flora and fauna.

Uttaranchal : The Garhwal and Kumaon hill regions are the places which attracts tourists for a true jeep safari experience. It’s bounteous beauty is filled with regions to explore. You can drive by Rishikesh to Joshimath bordered along Ganga and Alaknanda rivers. Also you can hit Badrinath with the scenic beauty of Nar and Narayan Parvat and Neelkanth peak, visiting various shrines on your way. This will give you a unique religious experience though your safari. Jim Corbett Park is where you can gain the real “wildlife safari” experience. It is the safest way to watch our national animal, Tiger! The entire area of the forest can be explored combined with viewing of various wild animals and the luscious flora. The person conducting these wildlife safaris are thoroughly trained therefore, you don not need to be afraid and enjoy your trip safely.

Although every thing is taken care of by the organization or people organizing your safari but you must also keep a few things in mind. Here are a few tips for a memorable safari:

Always follow the necessary guidelines and rules provided to you by the park or your guide.

Avoid winters, best time for safari in India is between October and March.

Never leave without proper planning and preparation. It is a good idea to make a “To do list”.

Don’t rush while driving, this will help you to observe deeply and even capture moments in your camera.

Which brings us to the next tip, NEVER go on a jeep safari without a camera.

Do not threaten the animals in any way, if on a wildlife safari.

Please do not pollute the area in anyway. Do not create litter or light fire as it can lead to smoke.

Always go with a local, if you attempt to explore alone, chances are you might get lost.

Enjoy and have a great safari!!

Hey Friends, nice to meet you again on 78mm Adventures Blog. As we told you in the last post that we will share the descriptive of every Adventure Sport. So, we are here with our next sport i.e. Rafting.

To recapitulate, River Rafting is a water sport. Enthusiasts use an inflatable raft to cross a river. As we all know, India has many places (rivers) where you can enjoy rafting at its best. Black Water Rafting and White Water Rafting are the two ways to enjoy rafting. However, White Water Rafting is famous in India. One can do rafting on various degrees of rough water in order to experience the fun and excitement at the best.

One can do rafting on various degrees/classes of rough water in order to experience the fun and excitement at its best. These degrees can be classified as

Effortless: Enthusiasts cross low waves, small rapids and slow current with basic skills of rafting. This section doesn’t require any special technique.

Fair: This class demands basic skills for rafting to steer faster currents.

Hard: Hard class, which has rough currents, ask requires strategy and veteran paddling skills.

Extremely hard: You must be an experienced paddler to cross rocks and violent water currents.

Tremendously tough: One needs advance skills to face the challenges of this class like deep rapids with hefty volume which makes this class comparatively dangerous.

Exceptionally grueling: As the name defines, this is the most dangerous class with extensive whitewater, gigantic waves, huge rocks and hazards. This class demands fate more than experience as experts say, “Winning this class without serious injury or death is simply a matter of great luck or extreme skill.”

From aforementioned degrees/classes of rough water, it becomes quite obvious that rafting demands loads of stamina and strength. And that is the reason rafting has its own precise techniques to tackle the watery obstacles.

Paddling: This technique is all about team performance. To cross the water obstructions, paddlers need to give enough speed to the raft while maintaining it’s balanced with equal number of paddlers on its both sides.

High siding: This technique could be opt if raft turn over on its inside edge. The rafters have to mount on the side of the raft furthest downstream.

After discussing all the difficulty level and techniques, let’s talk about safety measurements while rafting. White Water rafting could be risky, if main and basic safety precautions are not observed. The most simple and best way to keep injuries away while rafting, is to swim to an Eddy, which is a calm place on the back of a rock in the water where the current disperses in order to avoid being taken downriver. But above all every security measure, it is highly advisable to take experienced guides along with you while going for rafting.

Teesta River, Sikkim; Beas River, Himachal; Ganges River, Garhwal, Uttranchal are the few examples, where you can enjoy rafting and have fun being closer to water then being on a raft. So don’t just imagine yourself crossing the river waves with a raft, pack your bags and step out of your home.

Happy Holidays!!!!!!

In our last blog, we gave you briefs about the most popular Adventure Sports (Extreme Sports). But as we all know “A little Knowledge is a dangerous thing”, we have decided share described information about each Adventures Sports in our today’s and forthcoming posts.

So today, let’s talk about Trekking. As a recap, Trekking was on the first sport in our Most Popular Adventure Sports list. This activity lets you explore the areas on your foot where means of transport are generally not available.

In past few years, Trekking has become very popular among enthusiasts in India. Indian mountain ranges offer you breathtaking and mind boggling trekking routes. Himalayas, Karakorams, the Garhwal and Kumaon regions give you unlimited opportunities for trekking and other adventurous activities.
